Xiaoyu Shan

I got my PhD from the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2023, with a focus on environmental microbiology. Prior to MIT, I was trained at Zhejiang University and Tsinghua University in China on environmental engineering and microbial ecology. I will join California Institute of Technology as a postdoc in early 2024.

My research mainly focuses on ecology and evolution in microbial communities by combining theoretical, computational and experimental efforts. I am also very interested in advancing sustainability in agricultural, industrial and social systems by leveraging what we have learned in ecology and evolution. I was selected as a youth delegate for the 19th tripartite environmental ministers meeting among China, Japan and Korea.

As a Morningside Scholar since 2015, I have also completed extra coursework in art and humanity in addition to the regular curriculum.
